It was Friday afternoon… and the centurion at the cross makes an interesting statement: Matthew 27:54 records it this way… and Mark 15:39 states… while Luke declares that the centurion declares “Certainly this man was innocent.
Matthew 27:54 NASB95
Now the centurion, and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
Mark 15:39 NASB95
When the centurion, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
NOTICE… the centurion uses the past tense “was”… Jesus was dead. Tonight I want us to look at His Death (His Promised Passion) as it is PROMISED, PICTURED, and the POWER it held for you and I…

His Death Promised

Scripture paints an amazingly graphic depiction of the death that would come. Jesus Himself had been teaching this even up to the night before as He would have the passover meal with His disciples. It would not be until later that they would understand the necessity of His death.

These are but just a few passages not to mention all Jesus taught… not to mention the PICTURE that God had given the people concerning the cost of sin… DEATH!

His Death Pictured

Sin from the very beginning brought death as God had said it would...
Seen with Adam and Eve Genesis 3
Seen with the death of the animal for a coveringverse 21
The Passover that was in celebration was a reminder of the cost of sin... as the passover lamb shed its blood
Now Jesus “the Lamb of God” had shed his blood
We see it over and over in Leviticus as we see a Holy God requires atonement for sin… was in the BLOOD (life source) sacrifice!
Now the blood of Jesus would atone for man’s sin… a sacrifice once for all 1 Peter 3:18
1 Peter 3:18 NASB95
For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;
Paul would later write in Romans 3:23; 6:23; 5:8
Romans 3:23 NASB95
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 NASB95
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 5:8 NASB95
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
What a passionate demonstration of His love that He… the spotless Lamb of God, would shed His blood for OUR SIN!

The Power of His Passion!

The wrath of God poured out at Calvary on His Son!!! John 1:1-5; 14
John 1:1–5 NASB95
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
John 1:14 NASB95
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Mark records: “When the centurion,… saw the way He breathed His last” What did this centurion see???
The centurion had taken nails to the hands and feet of Jesus…
but as he did Jesus didn’t curse him, spit on him, or even fight.
He willingly sacrificed Himself… The Words He spoke
Rather Jesus would look at him and called out to God… Luke 23:34
Luke 23:34 NASB95
But Jesus was saying, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves.
...“Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” ...
There was victory in His voice as He cried out “It is finished” all the work, all the prophesy, all He had promised!
He heard the control and POWER as He looked up to the Father in Heaven and said, “Father, into your hands I commit my Spirit.
What POWER, What PASSION… The centurion was correct… “He Was”… Jesus, the Son of God died that day
Mark 15:43-45 records Jesus burial...
Mark 15:43–45 NASB95
Joseph of Arimathea came, a prominent member of the Council, who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God; and he gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. Pilate wondered if He was dead by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He was already dead. And ascertaining this from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.
I have been a part of many burials… often a hymn is sung or an instrument plays Amazing Grace
We will end our service in silence as we listen, as we ponder the Amazing Grace God gave us through His Son on the cross
… a cross that bore our sins!
I would ask that we not hold discussions in this room as people reflect, as we hear the sound of the nails being hammered into the cross...
